Mustangs Still Searching For First Conference Win

Senior Bubba Tuinei
Neither football team demonstrated much defense in Saturday's game as the WNMU Mustangs and the Adams State College Grizzlies combined for 111 points. Unfortunately, the Mustangs still could not get their first conference win. The Grizzlies won their homecoming game, 68-42. The Mustangs, who came into the contest averaging a RMAC-high 35.5 points per game, fell to 1-4 overall and to 0-4 in the RMAC.

The Grizzlies, who have now won two straight games while improving to 2-4 and to 2-2 in RMAC play, never trailed and scored at least 14 points in every quarter.

Scoring came in bunches as the Grizzlies went up 7-0 on their opening drive on a 39-yard score just 2:26 into the game. The Grizzlies then forced a fumble on the ensuing kick-off that Adams recovered at the Mustang's 22-yard line. After a pass interference penalty on the Mustangs, the Adams quarterback Eggleston completed an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Leading 14-0 after the second of eight successful PATs on the day, the Grizzlies came up with another turnover just two plays later when the Grizzlies intercepted a Dennis Havrilla (North Concord, CA, Mt. Diablo High School, University of Nebraska - Kearney) pass, returning it 23 yards to the Mustang 15. The Grizzlies were unable to convert a fake field goal attempt.

The Mustangs took advantage of Adams missed opportunity, marching 89 yards on 14 plays with Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School) as the play-caller.

James Brown (Tallahassee, FL, Amos P. Godby High School, New Mexico Military Institute) eventually capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run with just under 10 minutes gone in the game, cutting the Grizzlies' lead to 14-7.

The Grizzlies went up 17-7 on a 27-yard field goal just 3:05 into the second quarter, but WNMU was forced to punt on their next drive. This allowed Adams to connect on a 62-yard catch-and-run scoring combination. The Grizzlies led 24-7 with 8:47 still left in the second quarter.

The Grizzlies, who scored points on eight of their first 10 possessions, continued to score. This time it was from 20 yards out with 6:45 left to go in the half.

Adams defense held strong on the Mustangs' ensuing drive. WNMU handed the ball over on a fourth down attempt. Just three plays later, the Grizzlies scored again to put the score at 38-7. The Mustangs finally answered back as they went on a eight-play, 50-yard drive to cut the gap to 38-14 on a one-yard Jake Morales (Silver City, NM, Silver High School) touchdown run.

Just before the break, the Grizzlies strung tougher a 30-yard field goal to put the score at 41-14.

Another Havrilla pick gave the Grizzlies another touchdown with just 1:59 gone in the third quarter.
Despite the two picks, Havrilla threw for an impressive 245 yards and two scores on the day. His second score of the game was courtesy of an 18-yard touchdown to Christopher Miranda (Peoria, AZ, Peoria High School, Phoenix Community College), who caught the ball with one hand while falling into the end-zone.

Neither team would score on their next possessions; however, the Grizzlies went up 55-21 on an eight-yard touchdown pass.

Havrilla then completed passes for 39 and 32 yards before finding Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) for a seven-yard touchdown that made the score 55-28 with 3:05 left.

Adams State then completed passes to five different receivers on a 13-play, 51-yard march capped by a 10-yard scoring pass.

The Grizzlies continued to cause havoc on the Mustang offense as Havrilla threw four straight incompletions. The Grizzlies then built a 41-point (69-28) lead on a carry.

The Mustangs wasted little time in scoring as Josh Felton (Phoenix, AZ, St. Mary's High School, Phoenix College) darted 78 yards to make the score 69-35 with 7:55 left. WNMU then recovered the on-side kick before Colin Lund (Mililani, HI, Mililani High School, New Mexico State University) missed a 46-yard field goal attempt.

The Grizzlies could not take advantage and were stopped on a 4th-and-1 at midfield before Voller and Breaker led the way on a six-play, 49-yard Mustang drive capped by a nine-yard Voller-to-Bubba Tuinei (West Valley, UT, Cottonwood High School, Eastern Arizona College) touchdown pass that completed the scoring with only 2:43 left.

Breaker led the Mustangs' ground attack, carrying 15 times for 70 yards. He also had seven receptions for 43 yards while Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX, Anthony High School) and Scotty Crespin (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School) each made four catches for 174 combined yards.
