Scoring Isn't Enough For Mustangs

Junior Kevin Breaker and Senior Dennis Havrilla
The Mustangs stumbled on offense last week, posting only seven points, but got back on track this week as they produced 30 points against No. 16 the University of Nebraska – Kearney Lopers. It takes defense to win games however. The Lopers' quarterback Jake Spitzlberger had a hand in eight touchdowns and was 14 of 14 in the air to notch 65 points on the scoreboard in Kearney Saturday afternoon.

WNMU now has lost their last six matchups and remains winless in the RMAC (1-6, 0-6). UNK (7-1, 6-0 RMAC) won their seventh straight game, the longest win streak since the 2005 Lopers also won seven in a row.

The Mustangs trailed the entire game. After the first quarter, WNMU was behind, 14-3. Junior transfer Colin Lund (Mililani, HI, Mililani High School, New Mexico State University) posted the Mustangs only points of the quarter with 7:12 left in the first. Lund kicked the ball through the uprights for a 21-yard field goal and three points.

At the top of the second, the Lopers scored first. WNMU looked as though they were going to have to settle for another field goal on their possession, but a costly UNK penalty gave the ball back to the Mustangs. Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) ended the drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown. Lund added the point after.

The Lopers then went on a scoring frenzy. UNK scored the next 28 points to lead 49-10 at the break.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the second half, but the Mustangs could never recover from the devastating second quarter.

Led by former Loper quarterback Dennis Havrilla (North Concord, CA, Mt. Diablo High School, University of Nebraska - Kearney), the WNMU offense ended the game with 374 total yards. Havrilla, who rotated with Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School) throughout the game, finished 15 of 33 for 201 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Voller went 7 of 12 for 89 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

On the ground, the Mustangs got 59 yards and one touchdown from Breaker. Havrilla had 15 carries for just 20 yards.

UNK racked up 606 yards of offense, having a big day on the ground with 43 carries for 286 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, four Mustangs registered seven tackles. Joseph Faifili (Laie, HI, Kahuku High School, Eastern Arizona College) was one of those players. He also had 3.5 tackles for a loss of 12 yards and one blocked point after attempt.
