ODESSA, TX — Western New Mexico defeated UT Permian Basin 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) on Tuesday. Western New Mexico hit .404 with 47 kills and seven errors, while holding UT Permian Basin to a .142 percentage.
Western New Mexico separated itself at the net, while UT Permian Basin hit .142 with 36 kills and 21 attack errors. That production was paired with timely scoring bursts, including an 8-0 run and lead-taking stretches after early deficits. Brynlee Barris helped represent the attacking performance with 13 kills, no attack errors and a .765 hitting percentage.
Western New Mexico erased a 9-6 deficit in the first set with a four-point service stretch by Jayla McDuffie, including her ace that tied it at 9 and a later Isabella Brewer kill that made it 11-9. Western New Mexico later reached 23-20 before UT Permian Basin tied the set at 23.
Daphne Posthumus (Lelystad, Netherlands/CCNV Harderwijk (Netherlands)) closed it with consecutive kills from
Hannah Haggard (Tucson, AZ/Tanque Verde High School), giving Western New Mexico the set, 25-23.
Western New Mexico took control of the second set with eight straight points after UT Permian Basin tied it at 1-1, moving ahead 9-1. Barris served the final seven points of that stretch, including back-to-back aces, while Posthumus added two kills and Brewer finished the run with a kill. Western New Mexico kept UT Permian Basin from getting closer than nine late and closed the set 25-13.
Western New Mexico trailed 14-13 in the third set before Haggard served through four straight points, including a Posthumus kill, a Brewer-Posthumus block and a Hailey Meeks kill, to move in front 17-14.
Mikelle McAfee (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School.) later added a service ace during a push from 19-16 to 22-16, and Western New Mexico finished the set at 25-19 on a Barris kill.
Barris led Western New Mexico with 13 kills and 15 points, hitting .765 and adding two service aces. Posthumus finished with 11 kills, three blocks and 13 points.
Savanna Haefs (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista High School) recorded a team-high 22 assists and added six digs. McAfee collected a team-best 10 digs to go with five assists and one ace.
Western New Mexico is 9-7 overall and 3-2 in Lone Star play.
