KINGSVILLE, T.X. — Western New Mexico lost its match to Tex. A&M-Kingsville 3-0 on Saturday, with set scores of 19-25, 17-25, 19-25 at Steinke Center. Western New Mexico finished with 28 kills and a .174 hitting percentage, compared with 43 kills and a .252 mark for Tex. A&M-Kingsville.
Western New Mexico's main response came late in the first set, when Brynlee Barris served through four straight points that moved the score from 22-15 to 22-19.
Daphne Posthumus (Lelystad, Netherlands/CCNV Harderwijk (Netherlands)) had a kill during the stretch, and Western New Mexico added blocks involving
Jade Rampton (Nelson, New Zealand/Shanghai American School), Isabella Brewer and Posthumus. Tex. A&M-Kingsville answered with the final three points to take the set 25-19.
Western New Mexico answered an early 7-2 deficit by taking three straight points, including a Hailey Meeks-Barris block and a Barris service ace, to get within 7-5. Tex. A&M-Kingsville pushed the margin back out from there, and Western New Mexico could not get closer the rest of the set.
Jayden Hughes (High Rolls, NM/Cloudcroft High School) and Posthumus added late kills before Tex. A&M-Kingsville closed the set 25-17.
Western New Mexico was within 21-19 after Brewer's kill, but Tex. A&M-Kingsville scored the final four points to take the third set 25-19. Earlier,
Mikelle McAfee's (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School.) ace and
Jalissa Costa's (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina High School) kill gave Western New Mexico a 7-6 lead. Rampton and Posthumus later combined on a block that tied the set at 12-12.
Barris led Western New Mexico with six kills and 8.5 points, adding three block assists and a service ace. Posthumus recorded five kills and a team-high five total blocks.
Hannah Haggard (Tucson, AZ/Tanque Verde High School) finished with a team-high eight digs, seven assists and a service ace.
Savanna Haefs (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista High School) posted a team-best nine assists and converted her lone attack.
Western New Mexico is 8-7 overall and 2-2 in Lone Star play.
