Mustangs Split the Day in Lubbock

Game One:
LUBBOCK, TX. — Western New Mexico (23-24, 19-18 Lone Star) secured a 7-5 victory over Lubbock Christian (25-22, 21-16 Lone Star) at Maner Park. Western New Mexico hit three home runs in the game, contributing to its 11 total hits.

Western New Mexico secured a 7-5 victory over Lubbock Christian, marked by pivotal innings and strong performances. In the first inning, Western New Mexico's Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) singled to drive in Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School), giving them an early 1-0 lead. Lubbock Christian responded in the second inning with a two-run homer by Coryn Burris, putting them ahead 2-1.

Western New Mexico regained momentum in the fourth inning. Maria Ruelaz (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) launched a solo homer, and Markus added a two-RBI single, capitalizing on a fielding error to extend the lead to 4-2. The fifth inning saw the Chaps take a 5-4 lead with a three-run homer by Ashlinn Hamilton.

In the sixth inning, Western New Mexico tied the game as Addisen Byers (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) homered, leveling the score at 5-5. The decisive seventh inning featured another home run by Ruelaz, which brought in two runs, sealing the 7-5 victory for the Mustangs.

Final Score: Western New Mexico 7, Lubbock Christian 5.

Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and recording one strikeout over 7 innings. Byers contributed offensively with a home run, scoring two runs and driving in one. Peters added two hits and collected an RBI. Ruelaz had a standout performance with two home runs, driving in three runs and scoring twice.

Western New Mexico holds an overall record of 23-24 and stands with a 19-18 record in the Lone Star conference. The Chaps have a 25-22 overall record and a 21-16 record in the Lone Star conference.

Game Two:
LUBBOCK, TX. — Western New Mexico fell to Lubbock Christian University 6–3 in Lubbock. The Mustangs recorded eight hits, including a home run, but could not overcome Lubbock Christian's nine-hit performance, which included a crucial three-run fourth inning.

Western New Mexico took an early lead in the first inning when Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) walked and scored on a double by Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School), advancing Markus to third on the throw. The inning ended with the Mustangs leading 1–0.

In the second inning, Lubbock Christian tied the game. Julie Muniz's double down the left field line brought in a run, making it 1–1 after two innings.

The Mustangs regained the lead in the third inning. Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) singled, followed by Jenna Peters' (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) two-run homer to deep center field, her sixth of the season. This brought the score to 3–1 in favor of Western New Mexico. However, Lubbock Christian responded with two runs of its own, including a solo home run by Brianna ChambersLee, leveling the score at 3–3 after three innings.

Lubbock Christian pulled ahead in the fourth inning. Alexis Clark's single and Kadin Vire's RBI single contributed to a three-run inning, giving Lubbock Christian a 6–3 lead, which held for the remainder of the game.

Western New Mexico could not narrow the margin in the following innings. The game concluded with Lubbock Christian winning 6–3.

Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) contributed significantly with a home run and two RBIs, marking her impact on the game. Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) completed a full 6 innings on the mound, striking out six batters despite allowing six earned runs. Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) added two hits, including a double, to help the team's offensive effort. Morales also recorded two hits and scored a run to bolster the lineup.

In their next game, the Mustangs will face Midwestern State on Monday, May 4, at 11 a.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas. Western New Mexico, traveling for this matchup, will aim to secure a victory on the road.
