Mustangs Fall to Rambelles in San Angelo

Game 1:
SAN ANGELO, TX. — Western New Mexico (16-21, 12-11 LSC) fell to Angelo State University (31-9, 20-5 LSC) with a final score of 9–2 on Friday at Mayer Softball Field. The Mustangs managed a brief rally in the third inning with two runs but were unable to overcome a six-run sixth inning by the Rambelles.

The Mustangs faced the Rambelles in a competitive matchup. In the second inning, Angelo State took an early lead when Taylor Haywood scored on a single from Kamryn Loeffler, making it 1–0.

Western New Mexico responded in the third inning. Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) reached base on an error, and Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) walked. Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) then singled, bringing Lucero home unearned. Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) followed with a single to center, allowing Spencer to score and giving the Mustangs a 2–1 lead.

Angelo State regained the lead in the fourth inning. Kamryn Loeffler and Karli Manney scored on a double and a sacrifice fly, respectively, putting them ahead 3–2.

In the sixth inning, Angelo State extended its lead. A series of hits, including a two-RBI single by Zoey Sifuentes and a two-run homer by Tatiana Trotter, resulted in six runs, culminating in a 9–2 score.

The Mustangs were unable to score in the final innings, resulting in a final score of 9–2 in favor of Angelo State.

Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) contributed with one hit and one RBI in the game. Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) also added one hit and drove in a run, enhancing the team's offensive efforts. Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits while striking out two batters. Sophia Solano (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro High School) entered in relief to pitch 2/3 inning, conceding one earned run on one hit.

Western New Mexico has a record of 16-21 and is 12-11 in the LSC. Angelo State holds a record of 31-9, with a 20-5 mark in the LSC.

Game 2:
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Western New Mexico (16-22, 12-16 LSC) fell to Angelo State University (32-9, 21-5 LSC) with a final score of 12-1 on Friday at Mayer Field.

The Mustangs managed three hits, including a double, but were unable to overcome the Rambelles' 12-hit, 12-run performance.

Western New Mexico faced Angelo State in a challenging matchup with the Rambelles taking control early. In the first inning, Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School). Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) then delivered a single to left field, driving in Morales for the Mustangs' only run of the game. By the end of the inning, Western NM trailed 3-1 after Angelo State scored three runs.

The second inning saw Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) double to right center, but the Mustangs could not capitalize further. Angelo State added three more runs to extend its lead to 6-1.

In the third inning, the Mustangs could not generate additional offense, while Angelo State increased its lead with a three-run home run by Zoey Sifuentes, making it 9-1.

The Rambelles continued their scoring run in the fourth inning with three more runs, bringing the score to 12-1. The Mustangs were unable to respond in the fifth inning, and the game concluded with Angelo State securing a decisive 12-1 victory.

Morales reached base three times, drawing a walk and being hit by pitches twice, while also scoring a run. Manns contributed with a hit and an RBI. Carbajal added a double in her only hit of the game. Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks.

Looking ahead, Western New Mexico will take the field against the University of Texas Permian Basin on Sunday, April 12, in Odessa, Texas. The matchup is set for 11 a.m. MT.
