Alumni Spotlight: Terra Dunlap - From Standout Volleyball Player to Celebrated Athletic Trainer

Few individuals embody the spirit and longevity of Western New Mexico University Athletics quite like Terra Dunlap. A Mustang through and through, Dunlap's journey from student-athlete to senior women's administrator reflects not only her personal dedication, but also the lasting impact WNMU has had on shaping her life and career.

A native of Virden, New Mexico, Dunlap first made her mark at WNMU as a four-year member of the Mustang volleyball program from 1996 to 2000. During her playing career, she excelled both on the court and in the classroom, earning recognition on the Gold Honor Board each semester and being named to the Pac-West All-Conference Academic Team in 1999. She graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in movement science, laying the foundation for what would become a lifelong career in athletics.

Following her time in Silver City, Dunlap continued her education at Montana State University Billings, where she earned her Master of Science in Athletic Training in 2006. Along the way, she gained valuable experience as both a coach and athletic trainer, including a stint as an assistant volleyball coach for the Yellowjackets. Her early professional career also included impactful stops at the high school level, where she served as an athletic trainer and head volleyball coach. Her success was evident, earning honors such as 3A North Co-Coach of the Year in 2002 and 1A-3A All-Star Coach in 2004.

Dunlap returned to her alma mater in 2007, stepping back onto campus with renewed aspirations. She initially served in a dual role as the Assistant Athletic Trainer and Assistant Volleyball Coach, giving back to the very program that helped shape her as a student-athlete. Just a few years later, in 2009, she was promoted to Head Athletic Trainer, a role that would allow her to make an even greater impact across the entire athletic department.

Now entering her 17th year as Head Athletic Trainer, Dunlap has become an integral figure in WNMU Athletics. Her influence extends far beyond the athletic training room, as she continues to prioritize the health, safety, and overall well-being of Mustang student-athletes. In her role as NCAA Athletics Healthcare Administrator, she oversees critical areas such as institutional drug testing and insurance coordination, ensuring that WNMU maintains the highest standards of care.

Dunlap's leadership has only continued to grow over the years. She was named Senior Woman Administrator in 2011 and elevated to Assistant Athletic Director in 2016. In these roles, she has helped guide departmental initiatives and foster a culture centered on student-athlete success. One of her most impactful contributions has been helping launch the Student-Athlete Wellness Committee, which provides educational programming and resources focused on the holistic development of WNMU student-athletes.

Dunlap's story is one of full-circle success. From wearing the Mustang jersey as a student-athlete to mentoring and leading today's Mustangs, she exemplifies what it means to give back. Her career reflects the opportunities WNMU provides and the strong sense of community that continues to bring its alumni home.

Today, Dunlap resides in Silver City with her husband, Steve, and their daughters, Katie and Harper. While her roles and titles have evolved over the years, her commitment to WNMU has never wavered. Through nearly two decades of service, she has left an undeniable mark on the university - one defined by passion, leadership, and an unwavering dedication to Mustang Athletics.

For Dunlap, WNMU was never just a stepping stone; it was the starting point of a journey that continues to inspire those around her.
