Mustangs Dominate Red Leafs to End Tournament

LAKE ELSINORE, CA. — The WNMU Mustangs (4-6) took charge with a dominant 15-7 win over Simon Fraser (1-9) in Sunday's neutral-site showdown. The Mustangs unleashed a 17-hit barrage, featuring a home run and three doubles, to outmatch Simon Fraser.

Western New Mexico came out swinging in the first inning with a five-run explosion. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) kicked things off with a double down the left field line, and Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) followed with a single to right center, bringing Spencer home. Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) then delivered a pivotal blow, launching a homer down the left field line for four RBIs, scoring Morales, Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School), and Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School), putting the Mustangs ahead 5-0 right out of the gate.

The second inning saw Western New Mexico keep their foot on the gas. Spencer singled up the middle, and Morales drove her in with another single. Peters chipped in with a two-RBI single to center, and Carbajal crossed home on a wild pitch. Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) added to the onslaught with a double to left, pushing the Mustangs to a commanding 10-1 lead, despite Simon Fraser sneaking in a run.

In the third, Morales tripled down the right field line, bringing Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) home. Isabelle Soto (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic High School), pinch-running for Morales, scored on a fielder's choice by Lucero. Even with Simon Fraser's two-run homer in the bottom half, Western NM held a 12-3 lead by inning's end.

The Mustangs kept rolling in the fourth. Spencer's single, coupled with an error, set up Markus to drive in another run. Soto reached on an error, scoring another, and Peters singled to right field, bringing in Markus to stretch the lead to 15-5.

The fifth inning was quiet on both sides, as Western New Mexico held strong to walk away with a 15-7 victory over Simon Fraser.

Spencer shone with four hits and two runs, proving her prowess at the plate. Morales made her mark with three hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs. Manns added a home run and four RBIs, showing her knack for clutch hits. Peters contributed two hits and three RBIs, providing solid support to the Mustangs' offensive surge.

Up next, the Mustangs will be at home for their first conference double header against UT Dallas, February 15 at 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM MT at The Yard.
