Box Score LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — Western NM's Mustangs (3-2) suffered a narrow loss to Cal State San Bernardino (4-2) with a final score of 5-3 on Friday at Rosetta Canyon Park.
A late seventh-inning surge by the Mustangs wasn't enough, despite a home run and a triple contributing to their three runs.
Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) took the start for Western NM, delivering 4.1 innings while giving up four earned runs on five hits, including two homers. She struck out two and walked two over 19 batters.
Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) stepped in to relieve De Anda, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one earned run on two hits, including a home run. Tenorio notched one strikeout and gave up no walks.
Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) was a standout, smashing a home run that brought in two runs over her three at-bats, adding a crucial edge to the Mustangs' offense.
Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) contributed with a hit and a walk, bringing in one run and maintaining a steady presence at the plate.
Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) crossed the plate once and picked up a double, along with a walk in her three trips to the plate.
Addisen Byers (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) showcased her power with a triple, marking her only hit in three at-bats.
Ashley Legler led the Coyotes with a powerhouse performance, both offensively and defensively. She tallied two runs, two RBIs, and a home run, while also pitching 6.2 innings with three strikeouts, allowing three earned runs. Katie Griego and Iris Bejarano each added a home run to the mix, with Griego securing an RBI and a run and Bejarano chipping in with a run and an RBI. Their contributions were pivotal throughout the game. The Coyotes, Ava Paquin closed the game with a save, retiring the sole batter she faced with a flyout.
Western New Mexico now stands at 3-2, while CSUSB improves to 4-2. The Mustangs will play there second game of the day against CSU Monterey Bay at 5:30pm MT.
