ALPINE, TX — Western New Mexico (18-5, 12-4 Lone Star) cruised to a commanding 70-53 win over Sul Ross State (4-16, 2-13 Lone Star) Thursday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center. The Mustangs controlled the glass, pulling down 38 rebounds to Sul Ross State's 29.
Western NM came out strong, taking advantage of an early technical foul by the Lobos to seize the lead. Down 11-4, the Mustangs responded with a crucial 3-pointer from
Keylon Dorsey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower High School) at 12:32, closing the gap.
Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) kept the momentum going with another 3-pointer at 13:12, fueling a surge that put the Mustangs in front.
They built on their lead with efficient shooting and relentless rebounding.
Isaiah Broady's (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) emphatic dunk at 1:28, followed by a pair of free throws, underscored their dominance. Western NM wrapped up the first half ahead 42-26.
The Mustangs maintained their grip in the second half, highlighted by Broady's layup at 16:27, which further extended their lead. Seales added a clutch jumper at 6:08. The Mustangs capitalized on turnovers, converting them into fast-break points, and clamped down defensively to stifle the Lobos. The half ended with Western NM edging out Sul Ross State 28-27, sealing the 70-53 victory.
Broady led the way with 20 points, seven field goals, and six free throws, along with two blocks. Seales chipped in 15 points, hitting five of nine shots, including two from beyond the arc. Dorsey added six points with a pair of 3-pointers and two steals. Nolan Brown contributed seven points and snagged three steals.
For the Lobos, Antwonne Holmes topped the scoring with 13 points, four steals, and seven rebounds. Julien Barclay added 12 points, six free throws, and six rebounds. Tim Mikhailau scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Camren Roper rounded out the effort with nine points, two steals, and five rebounds.
Up next, Western NM will face Sul Ross State on Friday, Feb. 13, with tip-off set for 1 p.m. at the Pete P. Gallego Center in Alpine, Texas.
