Strong First Half Fuels Men’s Basketball Victory

Box Score ALPINE, TX - The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team delivered a wire-to-wire performance Friday afternoon, earning a 68–57 victory over Sul Ross State at Pete P. Gallego Center.

WNMU set the tone early, jumping out to a fast start behind efficient offense and aggressive defense. The Mustangs shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the opening half and used a 13–0 scoring run midway through the period to create separation. That surge helped WNMU build a commanding 39–23 halftime advantage, their largest lead reaching 22 points early in the second half.

Sul Ross State responded after the break, increasing defensive pressure and finding rhythm offensively. The Lobos outscored WNMU 34–29 in the second half and cut into the deficit with timely perimeter shooting and trips to the free-throw line. However, the Mustangs maintained composure, controlling the glass and capitalizing at the foul line to keep the visitors at bay.

WNMU finished the contest shooting 43.1 percent from the field and knocked down 18 free throws, while forcing 14 Sul Ross turnovers that turned into 17 points. The Mustangs also held advantages in fast-break scoring (18–10) and bench production (36–5), underscoring the team's depth.

Isaiah Broady (Chandler, AZ/Arizona Compass Prep) led the scoring with an impressive 17-point performance, shooting 7-of-8 from the field while pulling down six rebounds. Nolan Brown added a strong all-around effort with 13 points, knocking down four three-pointers and contributing defensively.

Andre Harris (Mesa, AZ/Hillcrest Prep) chipped in 12 points, six assists, and four rebounds, directing the offense and providing steady leadership. Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) finished with eight points and four rebounds, while Quincy Adams (Frisco, TX/Hamilton High School) and James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) each contributed valuable minutes off the bench. WNMU placed five players in double figures or near-double figures, highlighting a balanced offensive approach.

Sul Ross State was led by Antwonne Holmes, who recorded a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds, consistently attacking the basket and keeping the Lobos within reach. Cameron Roper added eight points and seven rebounds, while Julien Barclay chipped in eight points and five boards. Despite shooting just 32.7 percent from the field, Sul Ross State remained competitive through hustle plays and second-half adjustments.

Up next, Western New Mexico will host St. Edward's on Thursday February 19 at Drag's Court, tip off is set for 7pm.
