Box Score 2 Western New Mexico Splits Doubleheader at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team wrapped up a busy day of competition on Sunday at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium, facing a challenging morning matchup against the University of New Mexico before rebounding with a strong afternoon performance against CSU Pueblo.
Morning Match: New Mexico 7, Western New Mexico 0
The morning match against UNM started with a challenging round as the Mustangs teamed up for doubles draws.
Josefina Bailetti (Pergamino, Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Nuestra Señora del Huerto) and
Nikoletta Pytel (Warsaw, Poland/Cosinus Lódz (Poland)) teamed up for the first match but dropped 0-6.
Eva Guta (Bucharest, Romania/Liceul Teoretic C.A. Rosetti (Romania)) and
Xaviera Melgar (Tacna, Peru/Alexander Von Humboldt School) took the court second, but came short with 0-6, and finally
Lucia Carmena (Alcala de Henares, Spain/Les Complutense Alcala de Henares) and
Sofija Krstic () went third, but after a hard-fought match dropped by 1-6.
The singles saw hard-fought matches, with Pytel taking the field first but coming short at 0-6, 0-6. Bailetti took the field second, and after two hard-fought rounds dropped the match 4-6, 2-6. Carmena went up third, but her match ended with 1-6, 0-6. Guta battled in fourth, but concluded the match 1-6, 0-6. Fifth was Melgar, and after a tough fight, she came short at 1-6, 0-6. Krstic was the final Mustang to take the field, but her match dropped at 0-6, 1-6.
Afternoon Match: Western New Mexico 4, CSU Pueblo 0
Western New Mexico responded emphatically in the afternoon, defeating CSU Pueblo 4–0 to earn its dual win.
After dropping their first match by Bailetti and Pytel at 3-6, the Mustangs rallied together, and Guta and Melgar secured the second match with a 6-1 win. The Mustangs kept this momentum with Carmea and Krstic also securing the third match 6-3, earning the doubles point.
During singles, Pytel took the first match, which was left unfinished with 4-6, 0-1. Bailetti took the field second and won the match 6-0, 6-1. This created momentum as the third match from Carmena concluded with her securing victory 6-1, 6-0. The fourth match saw equal skill as Xaviera tied the first round 5-5, but the match was left unfinished. The final Mustang to take the court was Krstic, who won the first round 7-5, but her match was also left unfinished.
The final score against CSU Pueblo was 4-0, which closed the day on a positive note.
