Making Impacts Beyond Athletics

SILVER CITY, N.M. - Western New Mexico University Athletics would like to announce former men's basketball and football player Vonn Webb as this week's Alumni of the Week.

Webb attended Western New Mexico University from 1987-1989 and participated in football and basketball. Being from Junction City, Kansas, Webb attended Junction City Senior High School. Before WNMU, Webb also attended Neosho Community College as well as Kansas State.

As a Mustang, Webb was a successful football player earning all-league honors, while the team was competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

In 1988, he would play in all nine games recording 35 total tackles, 12 of which being solo. Webb would also lead the Mustangs in interceptions that season with five, which would help him earn All-RMAC honors.

After his playing career, Webb went on to earn his degree in education, and started his teaching career in Clovis, CA in 1989. At Clovis High School, Webb began coaching basketball in 1993. He became the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach until 1995.

Webb was the head varsity coach at Washington Union High School in California for two different terms in 1995-99 and again in 2000-03 where he saw a lot of success in his coaching journey accumulating a 182-32 record. He won two CIF State Championships, five section championships, and seven league championships. Webb also helped develop future NBA players such as Chris Jeffries, DeShawn Stevenson, and Demetrius Porter.

Webb gained experience and success at the Division I level, becoming the assistant coach at University of Wyoming during the 1990-2000 season helping the Cowboys go to a 19-12 record en route to a Mountain West semifinal appearance.

In 2003-05 Webb served as assistant coach at Fresno State and again in 2022-24. He also found himself at  University of California Riverside from 2005-2011, where he also served as the head coach during the 2006-07 season.

Webb would continue in education, at Academia Avance Charter School in Los Angeles from 2015-22. He was an ELA and history teacher until 2019, and then served as principal until 2022.

Today, Vonn Webb lives in Mesquite, Texas with his wife Michelle, and his family. He is an advocate for mental health awareness as well as fentanyl awareness, being the founder of Stay Shaded after the passing of his son Taelin. Webb speaks at schools and other events raising awareness standing by phrases such as "Saving lives. Building champions. Changing culture" and "Stand united, end the pain, save futures".

With his achievements throughout his career and life, the CIF Central Section awarded Webb the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026.

From an athlete here at WNMU, to being a successful coach, to now changing lives and impacting communities. Webb makes a difference not only to his community, but others.
