Silver City, N.M. - Western New Mexico University's men's basketball faced off with the Lubbock Christian University Chapparals. The Mustangs and Chaps were neck-and-neck for the majority of the game. Western did their best to make a surge after falling to a 10 point deficit, but could only come within 8 points before time was up. Lubbock Christian would win 61-53.
    The Mustangs were led offensively by
Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) (4-13) and
James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) (2-3), both ending the evening with 11 points. On the defensive side,
Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) dominated on rebounds, securing 11(8 def, 3 off). A notable mention,
Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School), finished the night off with 8 points(3-14) and 5 rebounds.
    In the first half, the Mustangs were averaging 32.1%(9-28) from the field and 50.0%(4-8) beyond the arc. LCU averaged 38.7%(12-31) from the field and held to just 10%(1-10) from 3-point range. In the second half, Western averaged only 25%(7-28) from the field and 22.2%(2-9) from 3-point range. On the opposing side, the Chaps finished the second half shooting 36.7%(11-30) from the field and a whopping 0.00%(0-5) from beyond the arc. The Mustangs struggled from the free-throw line, only managing 62.5%(15-24), while on the opposition's side, the Chaps averaged 82.4%(14-17). The final score, Mustangs 53, Chapparals 61.
    Western will be home once again, playing the Midwestern State University Mustangs. They will tip off February 8th, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. MT.
