Silver City, N.M. - Western New Mexico University's men's basketball faced off with the West Texas A&M University Buffaloes. The Buffs put their foot on the gas and didn't let up all game. The Mustangs fought to within 10 a few times but would ultimately fall 58-83.
    The Mustangs were led offensively by
Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) with 16 points (4-19) and
Aiden Wall (North Richland Hills, TX/Keller Central High School) with 14 points (5-10). On the defensive side,
Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) and
Judah Casaus (Albuquerque, NM/ABC Prep) both led in rebounds with seven each.
    In the first half, the Mustangs were averaging 34.4%(11-32) from the field and 22.2%(2-9) beyond the arc. The Buffs averaged 47.1%(16-34) from the field and 50%(6-12) from 3-point range. In the second half, Western averaged 32.1%(9-28) from the field and 28.6%(4-14) from 3-point range. On the opposing side, the West Texas finished the second half shooting 38.9%(14-36) from the field and 36.8%(7-19) from beyond the arc. The Mustangs averaged 77.8%(14-18) from the free-throw line, while on the opposition's side, the Buffaloes averaged 76.9%(10-13). The final score, Western 58, West Texas A&M 83.
Western will be out on the road next week, playing the Cameron University Aggies. They will tip off Thursday, February 20th, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. MT.
