Box Score San Angelo, T.X. - Western New Mexico University's men's basketball played a cutthroat game against the Angelo State University Rams this afternoon. The Mustangs and Rams were back and forth until the final minute. Western did their best to make a comeback but it was just too little, too late by the final buzzer. The Rams would go on to win 79-73.
    The Mustangs were led offensively by
Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) with 31 points(10-14) and
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) with 22 points(6-14). On the defensive side,
James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) led in rebounds with eight, while
Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) led in steals with three.
    In the first half, the Mustangs were averaging 50%(14-28) from the field and 61.5%(8-13) beyond the arc. ASU averaged 48.1%(13-27) from the field and 36.4%(4-11) from 3-point range. In the second half, Western averaged only 36%(9-25) from the field and 28.6%(2-7) from 3-point range. On the opposing side, the Rams finished the second half shooting 56%(14-25) from the field and 44.4%(4-9) from beyond the arc. Western and Angelo State had identical performances from the free-throw line today, shooting 85%(17-20). The final score was 79-73, Rams.
    Western will be back on Drag's Court in their hometown of Silver City next week, playing the Lubbock Christian University Chapparals. They will be tipping off February 6th, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. MT.
