Team Falls Short in Tough Loss

Silver City, New Mexico - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team carries on their 2024-2025 season in a match against the University of Texas – Permian Basin at Drag's Court, Silver City, New Mexico. The WNMU Mustangs would put out much effort and put up a fight until the end, but ultimately, they fell to the Falcons 54-83. The Mustangs would drop to the Falcons in their shooting era, averaging 37.3% (19-51), while the Falcons were 43.1% (28-65). The Falcons averaged better than the Mustangs in three-pointers, averaging 34.3% (12-35) versus 22.2% (4-18) for the Mustangs. The Mustangs battled hard with the Falcons in free throws, with an average of 66.7% (12-18), but the Falcons still came out on top with an average of 93.8% (16-16).
 
Alina Martin would lead the Mustangs with a total of 11 points. Yvanna Villarreal (Las Cruces, NM/Organ Mountain High School) had 10 points, right behind Alina Martin. Yvanna Villarreal (Las Cruces, NM/Organ Mountain High School), Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy), and Jaleyn Morrison would average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy) played a defensive game, recording five rebounds for the Mustangs. Ciera Dinwiddie would record two blocks, and Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School) would earn three assists for the Mustangs.
 
The Falcons make the most of Western New Mexico's 25 turnovers, generating 29 points off those missteps and establishing a strong early lead. Western New Mexico fought hard with 13 second-chance points.
