New Start for the Mustangs Against the Rambelles

Silver City, New Mexico - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team continues their early 2024-2025 season in a battle on their court in Silver City, New Mexico, against the Angelo State University Rambelles at Drag's Court. The Western New Mexico Mustangs would battle hard, putting up a fight until the end, but ultimately unable to finish the game on top, falling 49-66 starting up the new year. The Mustangs would fall to the Rambelles in their shooting era, averaging 26.6% (17-64), while the Rambelles were 31.3% (21-67). The Rambelles averaged better than the Mustangs in three-pointers, averaging 33.3% (9-27) versus 12.5% (2-16) for the Mustangs. The Mustangs battled hard with the Rambelles in free throws, with an average of 65.0% (13-20), while the Rambelles averaged 71.4% (15-21), coming out on top.
 
Alina Martin would lead the Mustangs with a total of 10 points. Natalie Magallnes and newcomer Savannah Wilson (Humble, TX/Kingwood Park High School) had nine points each, right behind Alina Martin. Savannah Wilson (Humble, TX/Kingwood Park High School) and Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) would both average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Kiana Ortiz (Tucson, AZ/Palo Verde High School) played a defensive game, recording seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Savannah Wilson (Humble, TX/Kingwood Park High School) would record two blocks, and Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) would earn three assists for the Mustangs.
 
The Rambelles capitalized on Western New Mexico's 16 turnovers, generating 16 points off those miscues and establishing a strong lead early. Western New Mexico fought hard with eight second-chance points and two fast break points.
 
The Mustangs will stay home in Silver City, NM, for their next match-up against UT Permian Basin on Sunday, January 5, 2025, to continue the new year. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT. Tune in on FloCollege for the live stream.
