Victory on the Hardwood

Portales, New Mexico - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team carries on their 2024-2025 season in a match against the in-state rivals Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena in Portales, New Mexico. The WNMU Mustangs would battle in the second half, making a comeback and earning their first win of the season 81-76. The Mustangs would rise above the Greyhounds in their shooting era, averaging 49.2% (30-61), while the Greyhounds were 34.7% (24-72). The Mustangs fall below the Greyhounds in three-pointers, averaging 15.4% (2-13) versus 29.6% (8-27) for the Greyhounds. The Mustangs battled hard with the Greyhounds in free throws, with an average of 82.6 % (19-23), while the Greyhounds averaged 58.1 % (18-31) falling to the Mustangs.
 
Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School) would lead the Mustangs with a total of 16 points. Alina Martin, Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School), and Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School) would average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Alina Martin and Kiana Ortiz (Tucson, AZ/Palo Verde High School) played a defensive game, recording seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Savannah Wilson (Humble, TX/Kingwood Park High School) recorded 2 blocks and Natalie Magallanes (Midland, TX/Midland Legacy High School) earned seven assists to help the team out.
 
The Greyhounds make the most of Western New Mexico's 23 turnovers, generating 23 points off those missteps and establishing a strong early lead. Western New Mexico fought hard with 11 second-chance points and 14 fast-break points.
 
The WNMU Mustangs will return to back home to Silver City, New Mexico for a match-up against Texas A&M - Kingsville on Thursday, January 23, 2025, to continue their season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT. Tune in on FloCollege for the live stream.
