A Loss in Portales for the Mustangs

Portales, New Mexico - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Men's Basketball team carries on their 2024-2025 season in a match against the in-state rivals Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena in Portales, New Mexico. The WNMU Mustangs would battle in the second half but still come up short against the Greyhounds, 72-101. The Mustangs would fall below the Greyhounds in their shooting era, averaging 31.3% (21-67), while the Greyhounds were 57.8% (37-64). The Mustangs did not beat the Greyhounds in three-pointers, averaging 36.7% (11-30 versus 50.0% (8-16) for the Greyhounds. The Mustangs battled hard with the Greyhounds in free throws, with an average of 90.5 % (19-21), while the Greyhounds averaged 86.4% (19-22), falling to the Mustangs.
 
Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) would lead the Mustangs with a total of 31 points. Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School), Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School), James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School), and Aiden Wall (North Richland Hills, TX/Keller Central High School) would average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) and Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) played a defensive game, recording five rebounds for the Mustangs. Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) recorded two blocks, and Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) and Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) earned four assists to help the team out.
 
The Greyhounds make the most of Western New Mexico's 13 turnovers, generating 15 points off those missteps and establishing a strong early lead. Western New Mexico fought hard with eight second-chance points and nine fast-break points.
