The Comeback that Fell Short

Canyon, Texas - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team carries on their 2024-2025 season in a match against the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs at First United Ban Center in Canyon, Texas. The WNMU Mustangs would battle in the second half to try and come back totaling 40 points but would lose to the WT A&M Lady Buffs 57-69. The Mustangs would fall below the Lady Buffs in their shooting era, averaging 32.8% (19-58), while the Lady Buffs were 36.4% (20-55). The Mustangs averaged better than the Lady Buffs in three-pointers, averaging 33.3% (5-15) versus 28.0% (7-25) for the Lady Buffs. The Mustangs battled hard with the Lady Buffs in free throws, with an average of 56.0 % (14-25), but the Lady Buffs still came out on top with an average of 75.9% (22-29).
 
Alina Martin would lead the Mustangs with a total of 18 points. Yvanna Villarreal (Las Cruces, NM/Organ Mountain High School) would average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Alina Martin played a defensive game, recording nine rebounds for the Mustangs. Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School) earned three assists to help the team out.
 
The Lady Buffs make the most of Western New Mexico's 22 turnovers, generating 16 points off those missteps and establishing a strong early lead. Western New Mexico fought hard with 10 second-chance points and eight fast break points.
 
The WNMU Mustangs will return to New Mexico but travel to Portales for a match-up against Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, January 18, 2025, to continue their season. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT. Tune in on FloCollege for the live stream.
