SILVER CITY, NM – WNMU Softball played the first two series games against #6 UT Tyler in their own backyard. In the first game, the Mustangs fell 4-7. Though WNMU would tie the game up in the third inning of the 2nd match, they would fall in Game 2 as well 6-24.
GAME 1:
The Mustangs would hold the Patriots from scoring in the first 2 innings, but would allow a few hot batters to give the opponent a 5-0 run in the top of the 3rd inning. After walking Adlai Alvidrez (El Paso, TX/Americas HS), Kaylee Hickman (Cloudcroft, NM/Cloudcroft High School) kept the Mustangs alive after a deep shot over Center Field, tacking on the Mustangs first two runs in the game.
The Patriots extended their lead in the following inning with an unearned triple. At the Mustangs next at bat, Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon HS) singled deep to Center Field and put Ana Armijo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista HS) in as her pinch runner. The Mustangs answered back once more as Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS) sent the ball deep over Left Field to bring in two more runs.
The Patriots tacked on another run in the top of the 7th inning to put themselves too far out of reach for the Mustangs to come back.
K. Cordova stepped inside the circle to pitch first for the Mustangs, having 2 shutout innings.

GAME 2:
The Mustangs came out fast in the first inning, taking an early lead over UT Tyler as several WNMU batters found ways to put the ball in play. K. Hickman started off the hot hitting streak with a single. Following her batting performance was Ramona Fossum (Mescalero, NM/Mescalero Apache HS), and later, J. Peters who brought in K. Hickman. A double from Laryssa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) would also allow R. Fossum and Ana Armijo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista HS), who pinch ran for J. Peters, to score for WNMU.
The Patriots would score in the 2nd inning and take the lead by one after batting in inning 3. They scored in the 4th inning as well to make the game 3-6 Tyler.
The Mustangs had one more fight left as A. Alvidrez started off the 4th inning with a single. K. Hickman earned her 2nd HR of the day as she sailed another ball over Center Field. At the very next AB, R. Fossum hit a back-to-back HR for the Mustangs.
UT Tyler made statements in innings 5 and 7 and they secured their victory over the Mustangs 24-6.
The Mustangs earned 5 SOs in Game 2 starting with Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) in the circle.

The Mustangs will play against UT Tyler at the Yard tomorrow at noon to wrap up the series. Following Game 3, the Mustangs will host a Home Run Derby for the fans.
