SILVER CITY, NM – The WNMU Softball team welcomed the #1 ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs to The Yard on Thursday afternoon for the first two games of a three game series. Though the Mustangs were aggressive throughout the day, they would fall in both games with finals of 2-17 in game one and 4-17 in game two.

GAME 1:

WNMU would allow WT to score five runs in the first two innings innings, but would cut into the lead in the home half of the second, as Kaylee Hickman (Cloudcroft, NM/Cloudcroft High School) hit a deep RBI double to bring in Ramona Fossum (Mescalero, NM/Mescalero Apache HS).

The Mustangs would get on the board again late in the 4th inning, when Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS) scored off of a Fossum sacrifice.

K. Cordova started for the Mustangs in the circle earning one strikeout in two innings of work.

GAME TWO:

After holding WT scoreless in the top of the first, Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad HS) would earn a base on balls and advance to third, before Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon HS) would hit a two-run blast to left to give the Mustangs an early lead.

After a rough third inning, the Mustangs would start the bottom half of the fourth inning hot as Laryssa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) singled up the middle. After a K. Hickman single and Nichole Armijo (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain HS) walk, the bases would be loaded for WNMU. Xitlali Trejo (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) would prove clutch in the situation, hitting a short single to bring in Morales. WNMU would score once more with the bases full after Ana Armijo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista HS) would walk, scoring N. Armijo.

Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) would start game two in the circle for the Mustangs.
