Rambelles Steal Game From Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Western New Mexico University Women's Basketball team hosted the Rambelles of Angelo State for Western Division Lone Star Conference match up. Angelo would squeak by the Mustangs 60-55.

This puts the Mustangs record at 8-11 (3-11).

The top scorers on the night for the Mustangs were Kiana Ortiz (Tucson, AZ/Palo Verde High School) with a career-high 13 points including three from behind the arc. Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy) added 10 points on 5-5 from the field.

Turnovers, especially late would prove to be costly for the Mustangs. Angelo would force 16 TOs leading to 16 points, where the Mustangs on managed to force 5 TOs for seven points.

The Mustangs would shoot 21-52 (40%) from the field and 6-20 (30%) from beyond the arc. Angelo shot 24-65 (36%) for the game and 5-20 (25%) from deep.

Both teams went 7-9 (77.8%) from the charity stripe.

WNMU's bench would be a bright spot, outscoring the ASU bench 38-4.

On the glass, Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) and Diamond Moore (Colorado Springs, CO/Harrison High School) grabbed six rebounds each. Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) dished out five assists. 

In the defensive department, Rodgers and Milan Tuttle (Oakland, California/Heritage High School) had a steal each. Rodgers also had two block as well.

In the first quater, Angelo took control early with excellent three-point shooting (5-10) for a 19-7 advantage. In quarter number two, the Mustangs slowly chipped their way back into the game, thanks to and eight point spurt from Ortiz. ASU lead at the half 30-24.

The Mustangs finally began to settle in the third quarter, as they tied up the Rambelles quickly. WNMU and ASU were all tied up 44-44 going into the fourth, 44-44. Through out the fourth quarter the Rambelles and Mustangs would go blow for blow, with neither team being able to build much of a lead. The Mustangs final three possesions would end in TOs to give the Rambelles a 60-55 win.

Madeline Stephend scored a game-high 19 points for the Rambelles. Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant added 15.

The Mustangs will be back in action at Cameron Feb. 8th against (4:30 PM MT).
