Box Score PORTALES, N.M– The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team played in their final road game of the season against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico. The Mustangs lost round one, 125-84.
This puts the Mustangs at 4-22 (2-18).
Five Mustangs managed double digits on the Greyhounds. Leading the Mustangs was Cortaviaus Seals with 17 points.
Evan Butts (Houston, TX/Cy Fair High School),
Tanner Vogel (Stratham, Australia/Georgiana Molloy Anglican School) and
Nik Atanasovs (Riga, Latvia/Vidusskloa) added 12 points each.
Aaron Miller (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo High School) contributed 10 points.
Bench points and points in the paint would trouble the Mustangs on the night. The Mustang bench was outscored 54-33. ENMU dominated WNMU in the paint
52-38.
Mustangs shot 13-41 (31%) from the field and 2-7 (28%) from deep in the first half. WNMU finished the game shooting 28-76 (37%) and 5-17 (79%) from three. ENMU would shoot 45-78 (57%) from the field and 15-29 (52%) from behind the arc for the game.
At the charity stripe WNMU went 23-29 (79%) and ENMU shot 20-24 (83%).
On the boards, Vogel each secured 11 rebounds. Seales dished four assists.
In the defensive department,
Jordan Williams (Pensacola, FL/J. M. Tate High School) had three steals and Vogel recorded two blocks.
The Mustangs began the first half trading baskets with the Greyhounds. The last Mustang lead would come at the 12:55 mark, 13-11. WNMU would keep this one close until the five minute mark of the first half, where they would be outscored 30-12. ENMU lead at the half 61-37.
In the second half the Greyhounds came out red hot, quickly building their lead up to 30. With 2:49 left on the clock,
Jeven Beltran (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) scored his first career collegiate points for the Mustangs. He finished with a career-high four. ENMU won, 125-84.
Greg Johnson scored 22 points on the Mustangs. Jachoree Ealy added 20 as well
