Mustangs Split Day 1 to ENMU, Run Rule Opponent in Game 1.

SILVER CITY, NM – WNMU were challenged by their New Mexico rival ENMU at the Yard today. The Mustangs finished game 1 by run-ruling the Greyhounds in the first 5 innings of Game 13-5. Eastern New Mexico took Game 2 to the Mustangs as they finished 12-1.

GAME 1:

WNMU put on a spectacular show in the first matchup today. ENMU tacked on the first run of the day as their star batter sailed a flyball deep over the left field wall. Western went to work in the bottom of the first as Kaylee Hickman (Cloudcroft, NM/Cloudcroft High School) hit a massive dinger to give WNMU their first run as Adlai Alvidrez (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) trotted in. Ramona Fossum (Mescalero, NM/Mescalero Apache HS) also sent the ball over as she walked up to the plate with Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS) at First Base.

Mustangs continued to put up runs in the very next inning as the Mustangs drilled seven singles towards the outfield. Following the second inning, WNMU still held their foot on the gas as they racked up a few more runs, including Hickman's second homer of the game. WNMU would not let off until the 4th inning as Laryssa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) nailed a double to center, allowing Xitlali Trejo (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) to round third and head home.

Mustangs produced 15 hits in total and only walked four runners. Hickman picked up 7 RBI's in Game 1.

The Mustangs starting pitcher was none other than Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS), who pitched all five innings. Not only did she strike out five runners, but gave up only 5 hits in total for Eastern.

Mustangs Notable Hitters Included:

Kaylee Hickman (Cloudcroft, NM/Cloudcroft High School), 4-for-4. (7 RBIs, 2 HRs)

Ramona Fossum (Mescalero, NM/Mescalero Apache HS), 3-for-3. (3 RBIs, 2 HRs)

Laryssa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School), 2-for-2. (1 RBI)

GAME 2:

Mustangs found a way to end the first inning as they allowed the Greyhounds to put two runners in scoring position. Although defense started out strong for WNMU, they would give up at least 1 run in every single inning starting from the second.

WNMU seemed to struggle making contact in the second game as they were dry in scoring until the sixth inning. Ana Armijo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista HS) kept the Mustangs from getting shutout as she sent a long flyball over left field.

The Mustangs started the mound with Madison Kloepper (Llano, TX/Llano HS). ENMU's pitcher, J Rivera, finished game 2 with six SOs and gave up only four hits to WNMU

Mustangs Notable Hitters Included:

Ana Armijo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista HS), 1-for-2. (1 HR)

Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS), 1-for-1.

Laryssa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School), 1-for-3.

A Vasquez, 4-for-4.

M. Patterson, 2-for-4.
