SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Western New Mexico University Women's Basketball team welcomed the Falcons of UTPB to Drag's Court on Thursday February 2nd. The Mustangs would lose in heartbreaking fashion, 58-56.
This puts the Mustangs record at 8-10 (3-10).
The top scorers on the night for the Mustangs were
Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) with 14 points.
Milan Tuttle (Oakland, California/Heritage High School) added eight points.
Turnovers would be the downfall for the Mustangs tonight, as they committed 19 TOs compared to only 12 TOs for the Falcons. The Falcons would turn those 19 TOs into 13 points.
The Mustangs would shoot 19-51 (37%) from the field and 8-22 (36%) from beyond the arc. UTPB shot 18-55 (32%) for the game and 7-24 (29%) from deep.
The Falcons bested the Mustangs at the charity strip going 15-21 (71%) compared to only 10-13 (76%) from WNMU.
On the glass,
Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy) secured six rebounds. Wright dished out six assists.
In the defensive department,
Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) recorded three steals and
Alina Simon (Killeen, TX/Ellison High School) added two. Joynes and Rodgers also had two block as well.
In the first quater, UTPB took control early with excellent three-point shooting (3-7) for a 16-12 advantage. In quarter number two, the Mustangs took their turn with some timely threes from Tuttle and Delany Cook, only training by one going into the half. 29-28.
The Mustangs quickly took the second half advantage with a scoop and score from Simon, going up one. Each teams would trade baskets, but it was the Falcons who took the third quarter, 45-40. WNMU took the game down to the final minute in the fourth quarter. Wright scored on a pull-up jumper tying things up 56-56. With 0.6 to Khiara Flugence laid one in for two, 58-56 Falcons. Rodgers shot at the buzzer would be block, giving UTPB the victory.
Morgan Helgesen scored a game-high 15 points for the Falcons. Alexus Quaadman added 10.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Drag's Court, Saturday Feb. 3rd against Angelo State (12:00 PM MT).
