Mustangs’ Fall Short in 45-64 Defeat at St. Mary’s

San Antonio, Texas – The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team battled hard but ultimately fell to the St. Mary's Rattlers, 45-64, at the Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas, in their latest 2024-2025 season matchup. Despite a strong effort, the Mustangs struggled with shooting efficiency, finishing at just 27.6% (16-58) from the field, while the Rattlers shot 47.6% (20-42). The Mustangs also had difficulty from beyond the arc, hitting 15.4% (4-26) of their three-point attempts compared to the Rattlers' 26.7% (4-15).

In free-throw shooting, the Mustangs held their ground, connecting on 64.3% (9-14), while the Rattlers edged them with a 69.0% (20-29) performance from the line.

Alina Martin led the Mustangs with 13 points, followed by Joslyn Montez (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) with 9. Both Martin and Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School) went a perfect 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Defensively, Martin recorded one block, while Kimble grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Martin also led the team in assists with three.

The Rattlers capitalized on 16 Mustang turnovers, converting them into 16 points, which helped them establish a strong early lead. Despite the deficit, the Mustangs fought back, contributing five second-chance points and eight fast-break points.

The Mustangs will next travel to Austin, Texas, to face St. Edward's University on December 7, 2024. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. MT/1 p.m. CT, and the game will be available for streaming on FloCollege.
