Mustangs Face Off Against Hilltoppers in Austin

Box Score Austin, T.X.  – The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team traveled to Austin, Texas this Saturday afternoon, taking on the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers. Despite their hard-fought efforts, the Mustangs ultimately fell short, losing 77-52.

    The Mustangs struggled in shooting, averaging 39.2% (20-51) compared to the Hilltoppers' 44.3% (27-61). Mustangs fared worse beyond the arc as they averaged only 15% (3-20), while the St. Ed's averaged 42.1% (8-19). The Mustangs could not catch a break, only averaging 56.3% (9-16) in free throws, concurrently the Hilltoppers came in at 83.3% (15-18).

    Nxerro Maluw (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie High School) led the Mustangs with 11 points, while Alina Martin and Natalie Magallanes (Midland, TX/Midland Legacy High School) both assisted the effort with 10 points, closely followed by Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School) with 8 points.  Nxerro Maluw (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie High School) led with 5 rebounds of her own with a close follow from Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) and Alina Martin who both had 4 each by end of game.
The Hilltoppers capitalized on Western New Mexico's 30 turnovers, converting them into 17 points and establishing an early lead. The Mustangs stayed in the fight but could not bridge the gap left by the Hilltoppers lead.

    The Mustangs will be at home for the first time all season, facing UT Tyler's Patriots in their hometown of Silver City. Tip-off is scheduled for  12 p.m. MT on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
