Mustangs Fall to the Eagles Once More

Silver City, New Mexico - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team continues their early 2024-2025 season in a battle on their court in Silver City, New Mexico, against the Northern New Mexico Eagles at Drag's Court. The Western New Mexico Mustangs would battle hard, putting up a fight until the end, but ultimately unable to finish the game on top, falling 50-58 for their last game of the semester. The Mustangs would fall to the Eagles in their shooting era, averaging 26.9% (14-52), while the Eagles were 36.4% (20-55). The Eagles averaged better than the Mustangs in three-pointers, averaging 45.8% (11-24) versus 21.4% (6-28) for the Mustangs. The Mustangs battled hard with the Eagles in free throws, with an average of 88.9% (16-18), while the Eagles averaged 63.6% (7-11).
 
Alina Martin would lead the Mustangs with a total of 14 points. Natalie Magallnes and Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) had 10 points each, right behind Alina Martin. Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School), Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School), Alina Martin, and Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School) would all average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School) played a defensive game, recording 14 rebounds for the Mustangs. Alina Martin would record two blocks, and Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) would earn three assists for the Mustangs.
 
The Eagles capitalized on Western New Mexico's 28 turnovers, generating 23 points off those miscues and establishing a strong lead early. Western New Mexico fought hard with 14 second-chance points and five fast break points.
 
The Mustangs will stay home in Silver City, NM, for their next match-up against Angelo State on Friday, January 3, 2025, to start the new year. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT. Tune in on FloCollege for the live stream.
