Battling Hard the Mustangs Lose to the Pioneers

Silver City, New Mexico - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team continues their early 2024-2025 season in a battle on their court in Silver City, New Mexico, against Texas Woman's University Pioneers at Drag's Court. The Western New Mexico Mustangs would battle hard, putting up a fight until the end, but ultimately unable to finish the game on top, falling 48-71. The Mustangs would fall to the Pioneers in their shooting era, averaging 30.0% (18-60), while the Pioneers were 42.2% (27-64). The Mustangs were on top of the Pioneers, with three-pointers averaging 17.4% (4-23) versus 16.7% (3-18). The Mustangs battled hard with the Pioneers in free throws, with an average of 88.9% (8-9), while the Pioneers averaged 77.8% (14-18).
 
Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) would lead the Mustangs with a total of 15 points. Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School) had eight points, right behind Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School). Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School), Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School), Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy), and Alina Martin would all average 100% in free throws for the Mustangs. Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) played a defensive game, recording nine rebounds for the Mustangs. Right behind her, would be Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy) with eight rebounds. Leading the team in assists, Jaelyn Morrison (El Paso, TX/Hanks High School) and Yvanna Villarreal (Las Cruces, NM/Organ Mountain High School) also gave her team a helping hand with a total of two.
 
The Pioneers capitalized on Western New Mexico's 23 turnovers, generating 25 points off those miscues and establishing a strong lead early. Western New Mexico fought hard with eight second-chance points and six fast break points.
