ALPINE, TEXAS - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team traveled to Alpine, Texas, on Saturday afternoon to face the Sul Ross State Lobos at the Pete P. Gallego Center. Despite a flashes of great play, the Mustangs fell short, losing 83-65.
The Mustangs struggled shooting from the field, finishing the game with a field goal percentage of 31.7% (20-63), while the Lobos shot 42.6% (29-68). From beyond the arc, Western New Mexico shot 34.8% (8-23), slightly better than Sul Ross, who made 31.8% (7-22) of their three-pointers. At the free throw line, the Mustangs outperformed the Lobos, hitting 73.9% (17-23) compared to Sul Ross's 69.2% (18-26).
Nxerro Maluw (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie High School) and Natalie Magallanes (Midland, TX/Midland Legacy High School) led the Mustangs in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) added 7 points, while Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas High School) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Maluw followed closely behind with 6 rebounds.
The Lobos capitalized on Western New Mexico's 24 turnovers, converting them into 18 points, which established a lead the the Mustangs could not over come.
The Mustangs will be on the road December 5, 2024, to face the St. Mary's Rattlers in San Antonio, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. MT.
