Mustangs Drop Exhibition to UNM at The Pit

Albuquerque, N.M. – The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team continued their early 2024-2025 season on Friday night, taking on the University of New Mexico Lady Lobos in The Pit. Despite their hard-fought efforts, the Mustangs ultimately fell short, losing 85-56.
The Mustangs faced challenges in shooting, averaging 45.0%(24-53) compared to the Eagles' 49.0% (35-72). Mustangs fared better behind the 3 pt line as they averaged 38.0% (6-16), while the Lobos averaged 27.0%(7-26). However, the Mustangs struggled in free throws, achieving a mere 40%(2-5) from the free throw line, similarly the Lobos managed only 53% (8-15).

Nxerro Maluw (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie High School) led the Mustangs with 11 points, closely followed by Larissa Laborin (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) and Steph Da Silva (Melbourne, AUS/Loreta Mandeville Hall High School) both with 9 points.  Jade Goynes also had 7 points of her own and a strong defensive performance, recording 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block.

The Lobos took advantage of Western New Mexico's 24 turnovers, converting them into 29 points and establishing an early lead. The Mustangs fought to the end but could not muster enough offense to come out on top.

The Mustangs will be on the road once more in Las Cruces, New Mexico, taking on the New Mexico State University Aggies. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT on November 20, 2024.
