ESPANOLA, N.M. – The Western New Mexico Mustangs Women's Basketball team continued their early 2024-2025 season on Wednesday night, battling the Northern New Mexico Eagles at the Eagles Sportsplex in Española. Despite their hard-fought efforts, the Mustangs ultimately fell short, losing 63-55.
The Mustangs faced challenges in shooting, averaging 46.0% (23-50) compared to the Eagles' 55.6% (25-45). They also struggled with three-pointers, averaging 27.8% (5-18), while the Eagles averaged 38.1% (8-21). However, the Mustangs excelled in free throws, achieving a perfect 100.0% (4-4), whereas the Eagles managed only 38.5% (5-13).
Alina Martin led the Mustangs with 15 points, closely followed by Jade Goynes (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley High School) with 13 points. Both players contributed to the team's flawless free-throw shooting, each going 2-2. Jade Goynes (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley High School) also had a strong defensive performance, recording seven rebounds and leading the team with three assists.
The Eagles capitalized on Western New Mexico's 12 turnovers, converting them into 14 points and establishing an early lead. The Mustangs fought back with nine second-chance points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
The Mustangs will continue their road trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for their fourth game of the early season against the University of New Mexico Lobos. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT on November 15, 2024.
