LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Men's Basketball team tipped off their 2024-2025 season In a spirited exhibition at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, against the New Mexico State Aggies. Western New Mexico would battle throughout the night but would ultimately run out of gas, falling 77-56 in front of a crowd of 1,042. The Mustangs struggled with shooting accuracy, finishing at just 28.3% from the field and 10% from beyond the arc, but did out perform the Aggies at the free-throw line, going 24-32 (75%).
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) led the Mustangs with 15 points, showcasing his game at the line by converting 8 of 10 free throws.
Isaiah Marin (Phoenix, AZ/Copper Canyon High School) contributed with nine points, while
Yves Nkomba (Leeds, United Kingdom/Elevation Preparatory Academy) added eight points and six rebounds.
Quincy Adams (Frisco, TX/Hamilton High School) played a physical game, collecting eight rebounds and seven points, while
Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) added four points and three assists.
The Aggies capitalized on Western New Mexico's 18 turnovers, generating 13 points off those miscues and establishing a strong lead early. Western New Mexico fought hard with 12 second-chance points and 11 fast-break points.
The Mustangs are on the road in Cedar City, Utah for game two of their early season, an exhibition November 4, 2024, against Southern Utah. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MT.
