SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico football team looked to make it three Chile Bowl victories in a row when they hosted the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds Saturday afternoon on an unseasonably hot October day. The Mustangs trailed the entire game and though they staged a late comeback, would ultimately fall short, losing 41-34.
The Mustangs' offense was led by quarterback
Josh Magana (Dinuba, CA/Dinuba High School), who delivered a stellar performance, completing 29 of 41 passes for 274 yards and five touchdowns and one interception.
Wide receiver
Deuce Zimmerman (Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage High School) led all Mustang receivers, finishing with 11 receptions for 124 yards and an impressive four touchdown catches.
Edwin LaCrosse (Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos High School) also made his mark, adding a touchdown with 21 receiving yards on three receptions. The Mustangs' rushing game struggled, with
Jamon Chambers (Federal Way, WA/Stadium High School) leading the ground attack but managing only 39 net yards on 12 carries.
On defense,
Cole Lalama (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High School) led Western New Mexico with 17 tackles, including 14 solo efforts.
Diego Diaz (Frisco, TX/) added 11 tackles, while
Osvaldo Raigosa (Whittier, CA/La Serna High School, Gaberilino High School) contributed with 10 tackles and recovered a fumble. Despite their strong defensive effort, the Mustangs were unable to contain Eastern New Mexico's powerful rushing attack.
Kicker
Zach Gordon (Lillington, NC/Rosewood High School) was solid, converting four of five PATs and averaging 66.0 yards per kickoff with four touchbacks.
The Mustangs look to get some rest in during their bye week, November 2, 2024, before hosting Texas A&M Kingsville in the final home game of the season, Saturday November 9, 2024, at 12 p.m. MT. The Mustangs end the season on the road against Midwestern State November 16, 2024.
