ALPINE, Texas – The Western New Mexico Mustangs continued their 2024 volleyball season with a dominant performance, sweeping the Sul Ross State Lobos 3-0.
Eimaya Medina (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) had an outstanding all around match for the mustangs, achieving a triple-double (10 kills, 28 assists, 10 digs) with a .500 hitting percentage.
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy High School) led the Mustang offense with 13 kills. Jéssica Sales added two aces to boost the Mustangs' momentum.
The defense was solid through all three sets, with
Chase Kallevig (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg High School) leading the back row with 20 digs.
Jade Rampton (Nelson, New Zealand/Shanghai American School) and
Hannah Del Rio (Vacaville, CA/Will C. Wood High School) each recorded a solo block.
Set 1: The teams traded points, tying at 3-3 before the Mustangs edged ahead, thanks to a kill by Medina. After a tight battle, the Mustangs secured the set 25-22, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Riding the momentum, the Mustangs went on a six-point run with an ace from Sales.
Jayden Hughes (High Rolls, NM/Cloudcroft High School) closed the set with a decisive kill, securing a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: The Mustangs started strong, jumping to a 5-1 lead with a kill from Walker. Despite a comeback from the Lobos that tied the score at 10-10, the Mustangs regained control with a kill from Medina.
Maria Osorio (Pereira, Colombia/Calasanz Pereira) clinched the final point with a powerful kill, ending the set 25-20 and sealing the match at 3-0.
