Mustangs Fall Short at The Golden Tumbleweed

Alpine, T.X. - The Western New Mexico Football team took a trip to The Lone Star State to take on the Lobos of Sul Ross State University Saturday night. The SR passing attack proved to be too much to handle for the Mustangs as the Lobos would take the victory 34-20.

WNMU quarterback Josh Magana (Dinuba, CA/Dinuba High School) completed 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. He was under some pressure throughout the game, getting sacked twice. Conor Ackerley (Tempe, AZ/Corona Del Sol High School), who also saw time at quarterback, completed 10 of 16 attempts for 120 yards and one interception.

On the ground, WNMU had a pretty average day. Magana and Ackerley led the Mustangs with 14 and 7 carries respectively and managed 36 yards each, while Jamon Chambers (Federal Way, WA/Stadium High School) contributed 12 yards on seven carries, averaging 0.6 yards per attempt.

Anthony Flores (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School) was the leading receiver for WNMU, hauling in six receptions for 89 yards. Derrick Sailor (Glendale, AZ/Copper Canyon High School) (Glendale, AZ/ Copper Canyon High School) had five receptions for 57 yards, providing one of the team's few big plays.

Defensively, Cole Lalama (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High School) Finished with 11 total tackles, followed by Ruben Gamboa (Calabasas, CA/Sierra Canyon High School)(Calabasas, CA/Sierra Canyon High School) with 7 total tackles.

Kicker Zach Gordon (Lillington, NC/Rosewood High School) was a 100% on both of his kicks for 28 yards and 23 yards.

The Mustangs are back home next week as they will be hosting a match-up with long-time rival, the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds, Saturday 10/26/2024 at 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. CT.
