Mustangs Fall Against WT

SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Western New Mexico Football team traveled east to take on the Buffaloes of West Texas A&M Saturday night. The WT passing attack proved to be too much to handle for the Mustangs as the Buffalos would take the victory 42-17.

WNMU quarterback Josh Magana (Dinuba, CA/Dinuba High School) completed 8 of 21 passes for 116 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He was under heavy pressure throughout the game, getting sacked five times. His touchdown came on a 29-yard connection with Demarion Postell (Tolleson, AZ/Tolleson Union High School), who made one reception. Hunter Davis (Portland, OR/), who also saw time at quarterback, completed one of seven attempts for 33 yards and one interception.

On the ground, WNMU struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack. Magana led the Mustangs with 22 carries but managed only 31 net yards and one rushing touchdown, while Jamon Chambers (Federal Way, WA/Stadium High School) contributed 47 yards on nine carries, averaging 5.2 yards per attempt.

Anthony Flores (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School) was the leading receiver for WNMU, hauling in six receptions for 85 yards. Deuce Zimmerman (Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage High School) made a single catch for 33 yards, providing one of the team's few big plays.

Defensively, Cole Lalama (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High School) Finished with 11 total tackles, followed by Justin Evans (Detroit, MI/) with 9 total tackles. Tristen Williams (Inglewood, CA/Leuzinger High School) pulled in the Mustangs lone turnover, an interception which he returned for 20 yards.

Kicker Zach Gordon (Lillington, NC/Rosewood High School) made the most of his opportunity, hitting a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter.

The Mustangs are on the road again next week as they travel to Alpine Texas for a match-up with first year Lone Star member, Sul Ross State, Saturday 10/19/2024 at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT.
