WNMU Finds Dry Spell in Conference Play

Odessa, TX – Western New Mexico University met UTPB in Odessa at noon today where they struggled once again to find a conference win this season. UTPB started on a double figure run and maintained their lead through the rest of the game. The final score read 55-72, with UTPB on top.

Larissa Laborin (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) found herself hot today as she finished with a season high of 13 points, shooting at 55%. Her contribution to the team also included a rebound, an assist, and 75% shooting at the charity stripe.

Leading in rebounds was Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy), who grabbed two offensive boards and seven on defense. She also put up 4 of her 9 attempted shots along with a picked up assist.

While Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) had one of her lowest season FG percentages, she still was tied with Joynes and Jade Goynes (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley High School) as the 2nd highest scorer in today's game. She also finished at the stripe knocking 3 of her 4 attempts (same amount as Laborin), dished out 3 assists, and stole the ball from UTPB 3 times.

The Falcons outshot WNMU by 7% by the end of play and shot 3% higher from the stripe. One of the areas where the Mustangs successfully dominated were points coming off from the bench, finishing 5 more than UTPB.

The Mustangs outscored UTPB in the 2nd quarter and squeezed their deficit to just seven points, but let UTPB go on another massive run late in the third.

The Mustangs will return back to Silver City next weekend, where they will attempt to pick up their first win in the new year against Midwestern State at 5:30pm. A team who they successfully took down last season on Drags Court.
