WNMU Loses Mustang Battle Against MSU

SILVER CITY, NM – On a snowy evening, WNMU were challenged by Midwestern State in Silver City. After being undefeated at home thus far, WNMU took their first home loss for the season. The final score of the match was 61-73.

Both Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) and Silvia Blanco (Madrid, Spain/IES Gerardo Diego) put on an incredible shooting show on Drags Court as they each scored in double figures. Wright, who was the leading scorer for WNMU with 24 points, not only shot 9-21 FGs, but was 5-6 at the stripe, cleaned the glass three times defensively, made three assists, stripped away at least one pick, and blocked at least another shot. Blanco, who shot at a season high with 14 points, also managed to grab a defensive board and make at least one scoring pass.

Though Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) only scored two buckets total, she played phenomenally well on defense. She led the team in steals, having three today along with both an offensive and defensive board. She also managed to tack on two blocks and two assists.

Containing the most rebounds in the game was Diamond Moore (Colorado Springs, CO/Harrison High School), who was two rebounds shy of her season best with 12 individually. two on offense and one on defence.

WNMU went toe to toe with Midwestern State for the first 4 minutes of the game with the scoring leader being flipped over five times in the first quarter. Unfortunately, WNMU found themselves in a slump in the second half and had to scrap for every possession against MSU to be able to hang on to the game.

Though WNMU missed perfect opportunities to take any sort of marginal lead, they finished the first quarter completely tied and the second quarter only down by two.

At the second half of the match, WNMU let MSU take 10 point lead and committed almost twice the amount of turnovers as the first half. Though the team's shooting performance showed out for WNMU, it was still short of a win against Midwestern State.

WNMU will remain at home the weekend as they take on Cameron University this Saturday.
