San Angelo, TX – The Mustangs faced Angelo State in their first conference matchup for the brand new year. After taking a lead late in the third quarter, WNMU would go on to lose 68-81 to the Rams by the end of the game.
A major shooting performance came from
Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) today, as she started off the game with a perfect 3-for-3 stat from deep. She finished with 53% on FGs, 50% on 3s, and made both of her attempted shots from the charity stripe. Along with leading the team in scoring at a season high of 23 points, she also came off the floor with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Diamond Moore (Colorado Springs, CO/Harrison High School) also played exceptionally well, shooting 50% of FGs too. Aside of making her lone attempted free-throw, she powered under the basket with seven grabbed boards, three blocks, and two steals.
Leading the team in passes was
Jade Goynes (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley High School), who had four of her own. She also picked up three steals, one rebound, and was perfect 3 for 3 from the stripe.
The Mustangs started today on a huge shooting drought and let the Rams go on a 12 point run. Although they had a very slow start, the Mustangs found ways to produce buckets as they dished out the first few passes to Wright, who would put the team back in the game.
Although Angelo State shot 60% on FGs in the first quarter, a few errors would allow the Mustangs to tie them up by halftime.
WNMU even took a 5-point lead at the beginning of the third, but went on another major shooting drought for the 2
nd half of the third quarter.
The team spent the last quarter trying to catch up, but it was not enough to close out the game.
WNMU looks to bounce back from their loss this Saturday as they take on the UT Permian Basin Falcons at noon.
