Mustangs Matchup with Javelinas Decided In Final Seconds

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team hit the road for the first time in 2024 with a matchup against the Javelinas from Texas A&M-Kingsville. Prosper Obidiebube's (Houston, TX/Aspire Academy) half court shot was off the mark as the time expired, giving the Javelinas a 60-58 win.
 
This puts the Mustangs at 3-13 (1-10).
 
Three Mustangs managed double-digits on the Javelinas. Allen Fordham (Far Rockaway, NY/Queens High School For Technology) lead the Mustangs with 13 points on the night. Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) and Obidiebube added 12 points each.
 
A poor performance at the free throw line would be the Mustangs undoing. 
 
Mustangs shot 10-31 (32%) from the field and 4-12 (22%) from deep in the first half. WNMU finished the game shooting 21-52 (40%) and 5-18 (27%) from three. TAMUK would shoot 18-59 (40%) from the field and 4-22 (18%) from behind the arc for the game.
 
At the charity stripe WNMU went 11-23 (47%) and Kingsville shot 20-26 (78%).

On the boards, Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) snagged 10 rebounds. Evan Butts (Houston, TX/Cy Fair High School) dished three assists. 

In the defensive department, Obidiebube was good for three steals. Two Mustangs had a block.
 
The Mustangs began the first half by getting in a groove early. WNMU opened up an early lead in 26-12 lead halfway through the half. The first half ended in favor of the Mustangs 28-24. 

In the second half the Mustangs quickly found themselves up 11 points early. The Javelinas slowly chipped away at the Mustang lead, eventually tying the game at 49. With two seconds on the clock, C.J. Smith drove hit a floater in the lane with 2.3 and seconds and sent the Mustangs to defeat, 60-58.
 
Smith scored a game-high 16 points for the Jevelinas.
