LAREDO, Texas – The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team finished up a quick two-game road trip against the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International. The Dustdevils bested the Mustangs 86-63.
This puts the Mustangs at 3-14 (1-11).
Three Mustangs managed double-digits on the Dustdevils. The Mustangs leading scorer,
Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) scored 15 points.
Prosper Obidiebube (Houston, TX/Aspire Academy) added 11 points and
LaMarqus Merchant Jr. (Utica, NY/Utica Academy of Science) contributed 10.
Points in the paint and turnovers are where the Dustdevils held their biggest edge on the Mustangs. The Mustangs were outscore 20-40 in the paint. As for turnovers, the Dustdevils forced 19 on the Mustangs, as the Mustangs could only force 12.
Mustangs shot 10-25 (40%) from the field and 3-6 (50%) from deep in the first half. WNMU finished the game shooting 20-51 (39%) and 5-12 (41%) from three. TAMIU would shoot 32-66 (40%) from the field and 10-26 (18%) from behind the arc for the game.
At the charity stripe WNMU went 18-22 (81%) and International shot 12-15 (80%).
On the boards, Seales and
Tanner Vogel (Stratham, Australia/Georgiana Molloy Anglican School) each grabbed five rebounds. Merchant Jr. dished three assists.
In the defensive department, three different Mustangs recorded a steal and a block.
The Mustangs began the first half by trading baskets with the Dustdevils. The Mustangs took the lead thanks to a jumper from
Allen Fordham (Far Rockaway, NY/Queens High School For Technology) with 13:45 in the first half. This would be the Mustangs final lead of the game. The first half ended 49-31 in favor of the Dustdevils.
In the second half the Dustdevils put their foot on the gas and never looked back. WNMU would not get closer than 17-points in the second half. The Mustangs fell 86-63.
Emaniel Alexandre scored a game-high 19 points for the Dustdevils. Mike Rivera added 16.
