SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team finished up a four-game home stint with a matchup against the Chaparrals of Lubbock Christian. WNMU lost a close battle 71-61.
This puts the Mustangs at 3-12 (1-9).
Four Mustangs managed double-digits on the Chaps. Leading scorer
Cortaviaus Seales (Rock Island, IL/North Scott High School) had a game-high 15 points.
Allen Fordham (Far Rockaway, NY/Queens High School For Technology) score 14 points in 17 minutes of action.
Prosper Obidiebube (Houston, TX/Aspire Academy) added 13 and
Aaron Miller (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo High School) contributed 10.
A brutally cold afternoon from deep would do the Mustangs in.
Mustangs shot 12-28 (42%) from the field and 2-9 (22%) from deep in the first half. WNMU finished the game shooting 35-54 (42%) and 2-13 (15%) from three. Lubbock Christian would shoot 25-52 (48%) from the field and 6-22 (27%) from behind the arc for the game.
At the charity stripe WNMU went 13-13(100%) and LCU shot 15-19 (78%).
On the boards, Obidiebube snagged seven rebounds. Seales dished out two assists.
In the defensive department, Seales and
Evan Butts (Houston, TX/Cy Fair High School) were both good for a steal. Three Mustangs had a block.
The Mustangs began the first half getting back cut on multiple plays forcing a timeout from Head Coach
Mark Bunker. After the timeout out, WNMU settled in and take a one-point lead at the 12 minute mark. The half ended in favor of the Chaps, 34-29.
In the second half the Mustangs and Chaps would trade baskets back and forth with neither team being able go on a run. That was until the final minutes of the game where
LCU pulled away by 10 for a 71-61 win.
Trias Morton scored a game-high 18 points for the Chaps. Aaron Gonzales added 16 points
