SAN ANGELO, Texas - The
Western New Mexico Football Team took a trip to San Angelo, TX for a matchup against No. 22 Angelo State. The Rams would throttle the Mustangs 62-9.
"We came out flat and allowed a good team to seize momentum early," said Head Coach
Billy Hickman. "As a young and growing team, we need to learn to get going out of the gate and play our game. All the credit to Coach Girsch and Angelo, they were the better team from start to finish."
The Mustangs and Quarterback
Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) completed 13 of 33 passes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown (TDs).
James Hoban (Parker, AZ/Parker HS) scored the sole TD for the Mustangs. Hoban had one reception for 37 yards.
Tobi Sonaike (Belle Mead, NJ/Oak Hill Academy) caught four passed for 42 yard.
Charles Byers (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) added four receptions for 30 and
Anthony Flores (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande HS) had three for 37.
Hoban led all rushers with eight carries for 19 yards.
Sanders Crawford (Liverpool, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) added five for seven yards.
Cole Lalama (Queen Creek, AZ/) led the defense with 12 total tackles, 9 solo.
Devin Graham (Yuma, AZ/Gila Ridge HS) and
Toalei Lefau (Kahuku, HI/Kahuku HS) each had a sack.
In the first quarter it was all Rams. Bradley Larson started things off with a 43-yard field goal (FG), 3-0 Rams. One minute later, Alfred Grear broke off a 40-yard run for six, 10-0 Rams. Brayden Wilcon followed that up with a 15-yard scamper to the endzone, 17-0 Rams. Bradley then smashed another 43-yard FG, 20-0 Rams. Chad Pines finished off the quarter with a 1-yard score, 27-0 Rams.
Andrew Pitts kept the scoring coming for the Rams in the second quarter, with a 70-yard punter return, 34-0. Albert Thomas IV joined in on the fun with a 15-yard pass from Gerald Gardner, 41-0 Rams.
Tanner Bobic (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley HS) would finally get the Mustangs on the board with a 24-yard FG as the half expired, 41-3.
The Rams started off the second half with a 5-yard run from Braeden Fuller, 55-3. The Mustangs lone TD came when Hoban took a 37-yard screen pass from Larsen to the house, 62-9 Rams.
In the fourth quarter, the Rams tacked on another with a 12-yard run from Jayden Jones, 66-9.
ASU's Gardner lead the passing attack going 14-23, 209 yards and 1 TD. Jayden Jones ran nine times for 113 yards and 1 TD. Zorhan Rideaux caught five receptions 112 yards. Alex Bouloubasis had five tackles.
The Mustangs will return home next weekend for Homecoming game against Central Washington (6:00 PM MT).
