SILVER CITY, N.M. - The
Western New Mexico Football Team returned home for homecoming weekend with a matchup against Central Washington University. The Mustangs would lose 55-17.
Their record now sits at (1-4).
"While we are certainly disappointed with the result, I am proud the fight in our team," said Head Coach
Billy Hickman. "We are playing with so many young guys and new faces in spots due to injuries, and it's invaluable experience those guys are gaining. We look forward to continuing to grow in our process this week as we head to play a strong Western Oregon team."
The Mustangs Quarterback
Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) completed 18 of 42 passes for 227 yards and 1 touchdown (TDs) and 3 interceptions (INT).
James Hoban (Parker, AZ/Parker HS) and
Anthony Flores (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande HS) scored the two TDs for the Mustangs. Flores lead all receivers with seven catches for 97-yards and one TD.
Tobi Sonaike (Belle Mead, NJ/Oak Hill Academy) added three receptions for 56-yards and
Jeremiah Hartfield (Montebello, CA/Schurr HS) caught three passes for 49-yards.
Hoban led all rushers with six carries for 52 yards and one TD. Larsen added 11 carries for 12-yards.
Rene Holguin (El Paso, TX/) led the defense with 11 tackles.
Preston Helu (Reno, NV/Ironwood Ridge HS) added eight tackles as well.
Osvaldo Raigosa (Whittier, CA) and
LJ Vongsy (Aiea, HI/Aiea HS) each recorded an INT.
In the first quarter, the Wildcats kicked things off with a 40-yard field goal (FG) from Josh Jones, 3-0 Wildcats. Hoban responded on the next position with a 40-yard to put the Mustangs up 7-3. Tyler Flanagan took one carry the next possession 55-yard to reclaim the lead 10-7.
Tanner Bobic (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley HS) would tie things up with a 35-yard FG, 10-10.
The Wildcats closed things out with 10-yard pass between JJ Lemming and Kaiden Hammond, 17-10 Wildcats.
Lemming kept cooking in the second quarter with a 9-yard strike to Marcus Cook, 24-10 Wildcats. Flanagan took a 1-yard run in to make it 31-10 Wildcats. Jones hit a 30-yard FG as the halftime buzzer rang for a 34-10 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats started off the second half with an 8-yard run from Flanagan, 41-10 Wildcats. Tre'Jon Henderson followed up with a 1-yard scamper, extending the lead to 48-10 Wildcats.
In the fourth quarter, Flanagan took in another one, this time from 3-yards out. Wildcats 55, Mustangs 10. The Mustangs found the endzone one more time in the fourth with a 10-yard strike from Larsen to Flores, 55-17 Wildcats.
CWU's Lemming lead the passing attack going 9-19, 146 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INt. Flanagan ran 14 times for 143 yards and 4 TDs. Cook caught four receptions 48-yards. Tanner Volk had seven tackles.
The Mustangs will hit the road next weekend for Western Oregon, Saturday October 7
th (2:05 PM MST).
