PORTALES, N.M. -Â The Western New Mexico University Volleyball Team made a short trip to Portales, N.M. for the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Preview hosted by Eastern New Mexico. The Mustangs would have two matchups with the Hilltoppers and Greyhounds, losing both 3-0, 3-1.

St. Edward's:

Maria Osorio (Pereira, Colombia/Calasanz) was offensive engine for the Mustangs in game one with nine kills. Letícia Correa did an admirable job dishing the ball around with 17 assists. Three mustangs recorded an ace each.
Lilouann Bechec (Cannes, France) covered the floor well with 11 digs.
Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas HS) and
Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) protected the net with 1.5 blocks each.Â

The Mustangs and Hilltoppers kept things close early in set one, 7-7, before St. Edward's ran away. St. Edward's closed out the Mustangs 25-15 after an 18-8 run.

Hilltoppers 1, Mustangs 0.
In set two, WNMU came out flatter finding themselves down 12-2 very quickly. The Mustangs would try to surge late, but it would be too late falling 25-15.

For set number three, the Hilltoppers came out firing on all cylinders again, with an 8-2 advantage in the blink of an eye. The Hilltoppers would keep their foot on the gas, finishing off the Mustangs 25-16.

Injured Senior
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) would tough this game out with multiple injuries and lead the Mustangs with 20 kills. Cortez added 11 kills as well. Correa displayed a great sense on the court with a season-high 48 assists. Cortez and
Chase Kallevig (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg High School) added two aces as well.Â

Bechec spent a lot of time covering the Mustang's defense with 21 digs. Walker would also record two blocks.

In set one neither team would back down as they were all notched up at 16 a piece late. This match would go down to the wire, as the Greyhounds won 25-22.

Greyhounds 1, Mustangs 0.

For set number two, the Mustangs got things started early leading 10-4. A kill from Walker sent the Mustangs to victory, 25-22.

The Mustangs would take set three by storm, leading 15-12, before the Greyhounds mounted their comeback. ENMU took things slow and eventually pulled away 27-25.

Set four was yet another back and forth set between the two teams, until the Greyhounds extended their lead by five, 15-20. The Mustangs would give it their all, but fall 22-25.

The Mustangs will resume the LSC Preview Tomorrow at 4:00 PM MT against Midwestern State.
