Mustangs Drop Two On Day One Of Stanislaus St. Tourney

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Geno Frugoli era of Western New Mexico Volleyball would kick in Turlock, Calif. for the Stanislaus State Tournament with matchups against Fresno-Pacific and Stanislaus St. After two hard fought matches, the Mustangs would drop both games, to begin their season 0-2.
 
Fresno-Pacific:

Senior Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) and freshmen Maria Osorio (Pereira, Colombia/Calasanz) would lead the offense on the night for the Mustangs with seven kills. Jéssica Salas would follow with six kills of her own. Letîcia Correa would spread the ball around the court nicely with 25 assists. Three different Mustangs would record an ace.

The back row of the Mustangs had a busy night as Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) recorded 15 digs on the night. Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas HS) protected the net valiantly with two blocks. 
 
The Mustangs and Firebirds started things out by trading points, being all tied at 10s. Fresno-Pacific would deploy a 4-0 run after that causing them to never look back, taking the set 25-21.
 
Firebirds 1, Mustangs 0.

In set two, the Mustangs would come out much better, leading 15-12 towards the end of the set. The Firebirds would use a 13-8 run to close out the Mustangs in set two, 25-23.
 
Firebirds 2, Mustangs 0.
 
For set number three the Firebird jumped out quickly to a 10-4 advantage. The Firebirds would keep their foot on the games to finish of the Mustangs 25-15.
 
Firebirds 3, Mustangs 0.
 
Stanislaus State:
 
Walker would be the Mustangs leader on offense for the second straight match with five kills. Correa and Madalyn Mavady (Las Vegas, NV/Liberty High School) dished out seven assists a-piece. 
 
Correa would be covering every spot on the floor as well tonight for the Mustangs with 12 digs. Salas would do her best Dikembe Mutombo impression with two blocks.
 
Set one would start with the Mustangs jumping out to a quick 6-1 lead over the Warriors. The Warriors would respond by closing out the set on a 24-6 run, taking set on 25-12.
 
Warriors 1, Mustangs 0.
 
The Warrior would ride the momentum into set two jumping out to an 11-3 advantage over the Mustangs. The would be enough for a 25-10 set two victory. 
Warriors 2, Mustangs 0.
 
In set number three it would more of the same for the Mustangs as they found themselves down 12-4 fast. Failing to gain any momentum, the Mustangs would fall 25-10.
 
Warriors 3, Mustangs 0.

The Mustangs will finish the Stanislaus St. Tournament tomorrow with matchups against Chico St. (12:30 PM MT) and Academy of Art (5:30 PM MT).
