TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team finished up the Stanislaus State tournament Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs would drop both games to Chico State and Academy of Art.
Chico State:
Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas HS) and Jéssica Sales would lead the offense on the night for the Mustangs with seven kills. Letîcia Correa would spread the ball around the court nicely with 21 assists. Three different Mustangs would record an ace.
The back row of the Mustangs had a busy night as
Lilouann Bechec (Cannes, France) recorded 10 digs on the night.
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) and Sales were a force up front with a block each.
The Mustangs and Wildcats would keep things close early with an 8-7 advantage for the Wildcats. From there the Wildcats would open things with a 7-1 run. Chico State would close out the set 25-15
Wildcats 1, Mustangs 0.
In set two, the Mustangs would come out much better, leading 6-3 early. Wildcats would slowly chip away at the lead until pulling away for another set victory 25-18.
Wildcats 2, Mustangs 0.
For set number three the Wildcats momentum kept rolling as they lead early 12-2. The Mustangs would have a nice comeback, but ultimately fall 25-19.
Wildcats 3, Mustangs 0.
Stanislaus State:
Walker would be the Mustangs leader on offense in this match with 16 kills. Correa would have her highest assist total of the season with 29. Sales and
Logan Dodge (Liberal, KS/Liberal Senior High School) both recorded three aces.
Bechec would have another admirable job on defense with 17 digs. Kimble seemed to have the front line under control with four blocks.
The Knights would run out early on the Mustangs leading 12-2. WNMU would fight back hard, losing the set 25-20.
Knights 1, Mustangs 0.
For set number two, the Mustangs would lead late 19-15 with some impressive play. That is when the Knights kicked it into high gear to close out WNMU 25-20 in set two.
Knights 2, Mustangs 0.
In set number three it would more of the same for the Mustangs as they found themselves leading early 10-5. Walker would put in the final point for the Mustangs as they took set three 25-23.
Knights 2, Mustangs 1.
Set four would be a back-and-forth battle between the Mustangs and Knights, all notched up at 15. The Mustangs would fight until the end but lose the set 26-24.
Knights 3, Mustangs 1.
The Mustangs will travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas next weekend for their next Bettye Wallace Invite.
